Vampire Academy, By Richelle Mead

9 Sep

Format: Audiobook (narrator Stephanie Wolfe)

Published: 2008 (first published 2007)

Publisher: Penguin Group USA and Audible

Back cover blurb: St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger. . . .

Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.

My review:

Quite a sexy effort for a YA novel. Wearing my mum hat, I was actually quite surprised how far this went… but wearing my perv hat I really didn’t care. In fact, I really wanted Rose and Dimitri to go that little bit further, but I guess I might have to keep reading the series to find out if that happens.

Of course, Dimitri is my favourite character – a Russian hunk in a flying duster coat, yum! – but I loved kickass Rose and all the minor characters, although Lissa was a little insipid at times. I wasn’t a big fan of the self-harm – not for a YA book (mum hat back on again).

Lots of humour, an evil bad guy, a few surprises and lots of UST. Yep, I’ll be reading the rest in the series.

My rating: 4/5
