Back cover blurb: Peyton, Sydney’s charismatic older brother, has always been the star of the family, receiving the lion’s share of their parents’ attention and – lately – concern. When Peyton’s increasingly reckless behavior culminates in an accident, a drunk driving conviction, and a jail sentence, Sydney is cast adrift, searching for her place in the family and the world. When everyone else is so worried about Peyton, is she the only one concerned about the victim of the accident?

Enter the Chathams, a warm, chaotic family who run a pizza parlor, play bluegrass on weekends, and pitch in to care for their mother, who has multiple sclerosis. Here Sydney experiences unquestioning acceptance. And here she meets Mac, gentle, watchful, and protective, who makes Sydney feel seen, really seen, for the first time.

The uber-popular Sarah Dessen explores her signature themes of family, self-discovery, and change in her twelfth novel, sure to delight her legions of fans.

My review: I’ve never read anything by Sarah Dessen before but she comes highly recommended by some friends whose opinions I value, so I was very keen to read this sneak peek into her latest effort. I was immediately drawn into Sydney’s story as she begins to recover from the shock of her brother’s conviction for running over a boy. Pretty much forced to changing schools by the incident, she decides to try out the new neighbourhood’s pizza parlour, and has an interesting encounter with the jovial family owners. This sneak peek ended too soon, but I am already invested in finding out more about kind-hearted Mac and his quirky sister. I’m definitely pre-ordering this one and May 5 can’t come quick enough. Highly recommended.

***Disclaimer: This sneak peek e-ARC was provided to me by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Huge thanks to them. ***

My rating: 5/5 for what I’ve read so far. I’ll review this book again fully after the May publication date.
