About LOVE IN THE LIGHT (Hearts in Darkness Duet #2):

Two hearts in the darkness…

Makenna James and Caden Grayson have been inseparable since the day they were trapped in a pitch-black elevator and found acceptance and love in the arms of a stranger. Makenna hopes that night put them on the path to forever—which can’t happen until she introduces her tattooed, pierced, and scarred boyfriend to her father and three over-protective brothers.

Must fight for love in the light…

Haunted by a childhood tragedy and the loss of his family, Caden never thought he’d find the love he shares with Makenna. But the deeper he falls, the more he fears the devastation sure to come if he ever lost her, too. When meeting her family doesn’t go smoothly, Caden questions whether Makenna deserves someone better, stronger, and just more…normal. Maybe they’re too different—and he’s far too damaged—after all…

EXCERPT:

“So Caden said you two met in an elevator,” the tattoo artist said to Makenna, amusement plain in his voice.

“We really did. We were trapped in it for over four hours,” Makenna said, smiling. It was a little weird to talk to someone she couldn’t look at, but she couldn’t move while he was working. “In my office building. I rode it just today.”

“That’s quite a way to meet someone,” Heath said with a chuckle. “How come nothing like that ever happens to me?”

“Maybe you don’t ride enough elevators,” Makenna said.

The tattoo machine pulled away from her skin. Heath laughed. “I guess I don’t,” he finally said, leaning back in.

The needles hit a sensitive spot along her spine that had Makenna grimacing. Originally, she’d been thinking of putting the piece on her shoulder, but when she’d decided on the bigger size, she thought it would look better in the center. Heath had warned her that the central placement meant inking over bone, which could hurt more, and it sure did.

Caden braced his elbows on his knees so he could lean closer. “Want to play twenty questions?” he asked.

She smiled, knowing he was trying to distract her and appreciating the heck out of the gesture. “Are there still questions left we haven’t asked each other?”

“Probably,” he said. “For example, I don’t think I’ve ever asked you your favorite sex position.”

“No laughing,” Heath said, as Makenna tried to hold back her humor. Heat filled her cheeks. “Also, TMI. However, I like TMI, so feel free to answer, Makenna.”

Since the needle was away from her skin, she did laugh that time. “Okay, so maybe there are questions we haven’t asked.” She winked at Caden as Heath got back to work. “And, to answer the question, the second part of the night on my floor.”

Caden’s gaze went molten. He flicked at the spider bite piercings with his tongue. And that had parts of her going molten, because she knew how freaking talented that tongue was.

“Yours?” she asked, arching an eyebrow.

My review:

Format: e-ARC, 193 pages

Publisher: Laura Kaye

Published: January 12, 2016

Genre: Contemporary romance

My review: Laura Kaye is one of my favourite authors, and I absolutely loved Hearts in Darkness. While this was still as hot in places, I found this sequel a lot more angsty. Caden is consumed by his PTSD and parts of this were hard to read as he struggled to find his way out to the light. Thankfully, the ending was very sweet and I hope Laura writes more about the other James men. I particularly liked Makenna’s brother, Patrick, and would love to read his story.

Dirty Rowdy Thing, by Christina Lauren (Wild Seasons, book 2)

25 Mar

dirtyrowdy

Format: e-book, 352 pages

Publisher: Gallery Books

Published: November 4, 2014

ISBN: 9781476777979

Back cover blurb: From the New York Times bestselling author of Beautiful Bastard, Beautiful Stranger, and Beautiful Player, Book Two of the brand-new Wild Seasons series that started with Sweet Filthy Boy—a story of friends, love, and lust.

Despite their rowdy hookups, Harlow and Finn don’t even like each other…which would explain why their marriage lasted only twelve hours. He needs to be in charge and takes whatever he wants. She lives by the Want-something-done? Do-it-yourself mantra. Maybe she’s too similar to the rugged fisherman—or just what he needs.

My review: This was so very good. Finn is just delicious, and Harlow is his perfect foil. I liked how strong she was, even in the face of some pretty awful circumstances, and their teasing banter was brilliant. Even the drama wasn’t too angsty and is over and done with pretty swiftly. There are a LOT of smexy times, and they are H.O.T. Finn might even beat out Max and Will for my favourite book boyfriend from these authors.

The secondary characters are a delight – I loved the addition of Not-Joe into their circle of friends, and even Ansel seemed much nicer this book than I remember him from his own book. I have a few issues with the way Lo and Christina are writing Australian Oliver, and I really hope they don’t make him a horrible caricature in his own book. I’m looking forward to reading it, but dread they’ll get the slang all wrong.

Hearts in Darkness, by Laura Kaye

20 May

Format: ebook, 110 pages
Published: April 20, 2011
Publisher: The Wild Rose Press
Back cover blurb:
Makenna James thinks her day can’t get any worse, until she finds herself stuck in a pitch-black elevator with a complete stranger. Distracted by a phone call and juggling too much stuff, the pin-striped accountant caught only a glimpse of a dragon tattoo on his hand before the lights went out.

Caden Grayson is amused when a redhead literally falls at his feet. His amusement turns to panic when the power fails. Despite his piercings, tats, and vicious scar, he’s terrified of the dark and confined spaces. Now, he’s trapped in his own worst nightmare.

To fight fear, they must both reach out and open up. With no preconceived notions based on looks to hold them back, they discover just how much they have in common. In the warming darkness, attraction grows and sparks fly, but will they feel the same when the lights come back on?

My review:
Holy Hades, this was hot! And I love love loved it! The story of Caden and Makenna getting to know each other in the confines of a broken-down lift was a quick read but one I could not put down.

I love stories about couples getting to know each other by letter, where they pour out their hearts and appearances don’t matter, and this lovely story held that same appeal. Makenna doesn’t get a chance to see Caden before the lights go out, and all he really sees of her is her hair, so as they talk in the dark they have no preconceived ideas or prejudices. He may be covered in tattoos and piercings but he has a vulnerable side which draws her to him long before they are rescued and can see each other.

Beautifully written, gorgeous cover, sexy story. My kind of book. Laura Kaye is definitely a new author to watch out for.
